IEEE 1588 PTP (Precision Time Protocol)

Overview
IEEE 1588 PTP is used to exchange messages consecutively to determine the offset between master and slave and also to find out message transit delay through the network. . This is to synchronize all the Real Time Clocks in the distributed network with sub-microsecond accuracy. The 1588 Master cyclically transmits sync-messages and follow-up messages for the purpose of offset correction. The master and slave also exchange delay-request and delay-reply messages for the purpose of delay measurement. PTP is based on IP multicast communication and is not restricted to Ethernet, but can be used on any system that supports multicasting. In the current implementation, Ethernet Communication is used.

Salient Features
  Compliant to IEC 61588(E): 2004, - IEEE Std. 1588(E): 2002 standard.
Supports both Master and Slave functionality
Less than 100 ns accuracy across different clocks of the network
Minimal applicable network, computing and hardware resource requirements to suit low end as well as high end devices
Time critical events implemented in FPGA fabric, while non time-critical in the software (ANSI-C)
Time stamping at the MII/GMII level for better timing accuracy
Open source IEEE 1588 software running on MicroBlaze processor with uCLinux OS
Applicable to heterogeneous systems, where clocks of different capabilities can synchronize to each other in a well defined manner
Frequency compensation to manage clock drifts due to ageing, temperature etc.
Easily pluggable to any MAC Controller and an easy upgrade to next revision of 1588 standard
Interface to synchronize master clock to GPS clock

Applications
  Electronic Instrumentation
  Industrial Systems
  Network log file accuracy
  Security
  Billing systems
  Electronic transactions
  Database integrity etc.
